10/20/2017 Contest update “Futility” was the word used when Celgene abandoned its once promising Crohn’s disease drug, Mongersen. So, despite a record-breaking week for the Dow and S&P 500, given the Mongersen clinical trial miss I suppose it was futile to hope for a big biotech Friday rally. At Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 44.69% YTD (vs. up 44.80% a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 25.23% YTD (vs. up 26.97% a week ago) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI), was up 44.80% YTD (vs. up 46.51% a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed up 23.15% YTD (vs. up 22.71% a week ago). IMAN’s portfolio, up 110.71% YTD, remained in the Contest lead. But newcomer, GHMM’s portfolio, is now in contention with a 97.58% YTD gain. It was boosted into second place by the week’s top performing stock, QURE. SMALLB’s portfolio, up 89.72% YTD, dropped to third place. At Friday's close, 45 of the 48 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 34 beating the NBI and 22 beating the SPSIBI. The 195 Contest portfolio stock picks have an average YTD gain of 31.42% and a median YTD gain of 13.96%, with 118 of the 195 picks still up for the year. Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.) Portfolio adjustments: None (All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.) Enjoy a stress-free weekend biotechies! Peace & good health, Bulba
