In the United States, the move from the draft to the all volunteer military has been, in my view, catastrophic. The public no longer pays much attention to dubious military adventures like Iraq secure that their sons and daughters will not be drafted.

As more sophisticated weapons systems remove more of the general population's children from war the military industrial complex will have its holy grail, perpetual war. Of course if someone pushes the wrong button it could end badly...
