Nokia redefines wireless design based on function with two new 6100 series phones
Nokia today introduced two new TDMA additions to its sleek 6100 series of digital wireless phones - the Nokia 6120 (800 MHz single band/dual mode) and the Nokia 6160 (800/1900 MHz dual band/dual mode). The new Nokia 6120 and Nokia 6160 set TDMA industry standards for talk and standby operation times. The phones are also part of Nokia's next generation of digital wireless handsets and will be available in commercial volumes during the first quarter of 1998.
The Nokia 6120 and Nokia 6160 incorporate a broad set of features, including new personalized feature settings called "Profiles," which enable a user to manage incoming calls and messages by pre-programming the phone to respond in different ways. Through Nokia's revolutionary menu software a user can activate these phone settings, such as "Silent," "Meeting," or "Outdoor" to respond to different environments and lifestyles. The phone is compact in size, yet features a high-resolution, illuminated graphical display, which allows for large easy-to-read letters.
Learning from the innovative Nokia 9000i Communicator, the 6120 and 6160 both take wireless communications one step closer to the features of smart phones. The phones include a phone directory that stores up to 199 names and numbers, an alarm clock, calendar, four electronic games and 35 ringing tones that include melody lines from popular songs.
Nokia continues to lead the industry by driving digital development. The new phones employ advanced digital capabilities including full support of TDMA IS-136 revision A features, up to three Number Assignment Modules (NAMs), Over-the-Air Activation (OTA) and enhanced audio and speech quality achieved with a Nokia-developed EFR (Enhanced Full Rate) voice codec. The phones also support conference calling of up to three parties on networks that support the feature.
"The new Nokia TDMA phones are industry benchmarks - no other TDMA product can match their size, functionality and performance," said Matt Wisk, vice-president, customer marketing at Nokia Mobile Phones. "No longer are wireless users limited by technology. These phones have redefined wireless design in that it is no longer about the technology, but about function. Now users can change the phone to suit their needs - from environment to lifestyle - whether at home or in the office, playing video games or checking the time."
Small and lightweight, the new Nokia TDMA phones offer impressive performance. With an extended lithium-ion battery, the phones weigh only 4.8 ounces, and offer up to three hours of digital talk time and up to eight days of digital standby. Other batteries available include an extended or vibrating nickel-metal-hydride battery or ultra-extended lithium-ion battery, offering up to five hours of talk time and up to two weeks of standby time. The Nokia 6120 and Nokia 6160 also have a full range of Genuine Nokia Accessories available for home, office and automobile, including a hearing aid adapter, headset and belt clip. Keeping with Nokia's innovative design, the phones come in an array of stylish and exclusive colored covers that continuously change color in the light.
