Maybe this rating was necessary before they could get the "big" federal project which didn't close at the end of last quarter:
ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 1998--

SmartSwitch Meets Strict Criteria for Upgrading Shore-Base,
Atlantic and Pacific Fleet Communications

Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS) today announced that its
high-performance SmartSwitch products have passed strict speed,
interoperability and reliability testing, qualifying them for the US
Navy's Information for the 21st Century (IT-21) project. Cabletron
SmartSwitches are now certified to be included in the Navy's
ambitious plans for upgrading the network architectures for the
Atlantic and Pacific fleets.
Under the PC LAN+ contract, the Nay has teamed with EDS to
select, certify and supply networking equipment. EDS has certified
Cabletron's Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Fast Ethernet and
Ethernet SmartSwitches as IT-21 compliant for voice, video and data
communications.
"Cabletron has successfully completed IT-21 Vendor Qualification
Testing with their ATM and Fast Ethernet solutions," said Peter Buck,
EDS' PC LAN+ program manager. "The SmartSwitches have passed all
criteria in the test and are now certified as IT-21 compliant."
"IT-21 certification highlights Cabletron's long-time commitment
to providing the federal market with the highest-quality, most
reliable networking solutions," said Robert Travis, Cabletron's
director of product marketing and development for federal systems.
"By offering Cabletron's ATM and Fast Ethernet Solutions through EDS'
PC LAN+ contract, the Navy is assured of a standards-based, reliable,
high-speed infrastructure to support mission-critical IT-21
requirements."

The Cabletron Advantage

Vendor's were qualified based on their ATM and Fast Ethernet
solutions. The Navy/EDS team tested products for interoperability
between virtual and emulated local area networks, redundancy, fault
tolerance and automatic reconfiguration after link failure.
Two award-winning SmartSwitch 6000s passed communications along
an ATM, OC-12 (622 Mbs per second) backbone, facilitating data from
high-end Fast Ethernet workstations. When put to the test, the
Navy/EDS team found the SmartSwitches displayed plug-and-play
installation, quick device location and true multi-vendor ATM
interoperability via PNNI (Private Network-Network Interface).
Utilizing PNNI, users may seamlessly introduce the SmartSwitch into
existing multi-vendor ATM environments.

Cabletron Passes IT-21 Vendor Qualification Testing

Cabletron is now included as an IT-21 supplier on the IT-21
approved list, located on the Navy's IT-21 web site
(www.chips.navy.mil/it). Information contained within the associated
web site includes additional Navy IT Umbrella contracts: PC-LAN+,
ViViD, ITSS, NTOPS, NAVNET3 and Super-Minicomputer 2.
