IMO, Cali is the technological leader in almost everything but I think China is moving fast to overtake it. The Internet and all things related to it changed the world and a lot of it came from California. Most of the world knows what Google and iPhones are and I can't think of anything that China made that the world knows as well.

The next move will be artificial intelligence. This is the topic I find to be the most fascinating. Saudi Arabia gave citizenship to a robot a few days ago (depending on your time zone) but whichever country controls AI will control the 21 century.

I'm not sure China has what it take to open this new frontier but if it's the US the world will have access to more things made by Americans and the cycle continues awhile longer.
