FYI Here's a news item from Information Week
____Cellular Vendors Form Wireless Internet Forum____ Wireless powerhouses Ericcson, Motorola, and Nokia have joined forces to create the Wireless Applications Protocol Forum Ltd., an organization whose goal is to build a common platform that will let Internet applications run over digital cellular phones and appliances.
The three formed the nonprofit company with software vendor Unwired Planet, a maker of Web servers and microbrowsers, and are opening up the organization to other interested parties. The forum will primarily administer work on the Wireless Applications Protocol, a wireless terminal specification being constructed by the four founders.
The specification aims to create a common architecture that would let wireless Internet applications run on any cellular phone or other wireless device globally, regardless of the type of wireless network supporting it. Such a standard, to be submitted to industry standards bodies, would encourage more developers to build wireless Internet products, the wireless companies say. For business users, Internet capabilities on wireless devices could provide quick access to information on company intranets or stock tickers, for example.
Srivaths The first draft of the specification, which includes details for a microbrowser, scripting, telephony services, and content formats, will be unveiled at the end of the month. Details are available at www.xwap.com . --Jeff Sweat |
