OT - "Healthcare is a wreck." I think many would agree. I would be the last to believe we should get free
healthcare. I'll just say - means test. Regardless of party, it seems like a couple of mice biting a snake on
the tail. We need a mongoose. In the meantime you play the hand your dealt.

Expanded Medicare, or lack thereof plays a role.
This on the South Carolina page:

Estimated 2018 household income: Below $16,240
Savings programs you may qualify for:

Since your state hasn't expanded Medicaid, you won't qualify based purely on income.
You also won't qualify for financial assistance on a health insurance plan.

I wish I could replay some of the discussions I have with my oldest. Her sister in law paid $1400 a month
toward her student loans over the last year, owes just as much as a year ago, can only deduct $2500 of the
interest, congress is thinking of taking that to zero, and I get free healthcare. This along with everything else that is
messed up is somehow at least partially my fault.

Pointing out that I thought it ludicrous that a "kid" with no money, collateral, or job could borrow 200K on
her signature alone almost blew the roof off. :)

Guess I am from a different time. In 1980 when I wanted to buy my land for $27,500, I owned a cheap house
in the mountains, but couldn't get ok'd for more than $20k. The wife and I both had jobs, and $6000 down.
I suppose it was Jimmy Carters fault. ggg
