I'm talking about a father who could give the school $20 million. Or another who built six of their buildings. Or another who is a politician voting on whether to tax their endowment. Or another hack who sits on the city real estate permitting council. Or a famous actress who could bring good publicity to the school. All of these are special admits, no legacy required.
OK, but in the end it's the same thing. The applicant is given special preference in admissions because of the applicant's relative. Either that relative is an alumnus, or the relative is a big donator or has something else to offer to the university.

So how does that apply to Obama and his getting into Columbia? Having a deadbeat dad that attended Harvard grad school isn't that strong of a pull.
