C'mon, it's not that complex. Routers check each frame which creates some incremental delay however this also provide higher layer functions as well. Switches don't look at the frame/cell once the connection has been made. This allows frames to pass through the network without internodal frame checking and delays. Most router companies are working to speed up their routers...in many cases turning them into switches depending on the protocol. Protocols that can be switched are and those that require higher layer processing are routed. A router that doesn't check each frame (perform layer 3 functions) is a switch regardless of how it is marketed. Gary
