A note to all (from Information Week)
Schempf took pains to emphasize that Compaq doesn't believe there are signs of a major
slowdown in the PC market. The industry consensus is for growth of 17% to 20% this year.
"Right now, we're saying there may be evidence of a slowdown, but we're not saying the
17% to 20% figure is in jeopardy," said Schempf.

Compaq is forecasting sales growth of about 35% over the first quarter of last year, but gross margins are expected to drop below the 21.7% achieved in the fourth quarter of 1995.
Schempf noted the company is expecting to keep earnings above the 80 cents per share
from the first quarter of last year.

Vadim Zlotnikov, an analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Inc. in New York, said
consolidation in the industry is putting pressure on larger PC makers like Compaq to be
enterprising with their pricing and keep inventory low. "That keeps order lead times for
corporate customers down, which lets IS professionals manage their own inventories better,"
Zlotnikov said. --Brian Gillooly
