Penni, now that I've had a few minutes to dissipate my immediate and inchoate frustration with a peer of proven erudition who would actually seek to support this lingual poopiness, I would like to take the time to present a more considered rebuttal (while rolling with porcine delight in topheavy sentences).
AHD has ADHD, or something!!
My Webster's New College, which I (arbitrarily) uphold as a more faithful arbiter of the mother tongue, lists gender as pertaining only to categories, mostly grammatical. Curiously, it does show the phrase gender gap as the next entry.
I find the use of "gender" as a substitute for "sex" to be slipshod stewardship of the language. As such, I will oppose it. I wil speak against what I perceive as a dilution of our verbal heritage in the service of an ill-defined sociopolitical delicacy.
Last and not least, I stich out my tongue and make rude wet noises to underline the fundamental righteousness of my position. Pbtphttbtpht.
