The HTV SuperPanel Discussion was very bullish on HDTV and less enthusiastic about SDTV. The broadcasters, partucularly, are pushing to get HDTV rolling and one broadcaster reaching 2% of the US (Dallas area), in fact, will be broadcasting a March 31, 1998 NHL game in HDTV. Trouble is, the manufacturers (Zenith) have been not nearly as focused and will not be able to deliver large quantities of HDTV receivers until the fall.

Some panel members thought that 1 million HDTV sets would be sold by the end of next year. Plenty of early adopters out there with big bucks.

Several DBS/manufactureres alliances (including HDTV transmissions and set sales) announced. Philips with EchoStar and DirecTV with Thomson (RCA). Maybe Zenith is holding out for PrimeStar. I'll ask John Taylor, this afternoon...

When HDTV sets get in the stores, according to one panelist, it should help the fence sitters decide to purchase since they will have the facts to compare quality and prices. The present NTSC sets offer exceptional value now, and will last at least the normal 6-7 year time span before replacement and can accept the digital transmissions via a converter box.

Going over to the exhibits this afternoon. Full report later..
