I find that many hongkongers don't really consider themselves to be Chinese in the mainlander sense.. similarly I find that many more recent Chinese immigrants to Canada from the mainland don't seem to consider the extant population of Cantonese to be Chinese either since they don't speak mando. Curious in a way.

I am sure that going forward China proper has a purpose for Hong Kong although I do not think it is as the big central financial hub that is still remains presently..

The lingering taste of British hegemony still being felt as a shackle in a sense it seems to me.. but HK is a very cool cultural laboratory and will retain value.

Just my two cents.. I still have to get to gramps' village :)
