11/17/2017 Contest update
TRAVEL ALERT: I will be traveling for a couple of weeks, so no Contest update next Friday, 11/24, or the week after, 12/1. I plan to resume updates on Friday, 12/8, as the Contest heads into the homestretch. (Impatient contestants in the running for the lead may want to post their totals while I’m away.)
The Contest median ended the week with a multi-point lead over the small cap biotech index! Congrats biotechies!
At Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 41.11% YTD (vs. up 40.33% a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 17.51% YTD (vs. up 17.95% a week ago) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI), was up 37.83% YTD (vs. up 40.05% a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed up 26.00% YTD (vs. up 25.41% a week ago).
This week’s Top Three portfolios all differ from last week’s Top Three. Rooters for ROBO’s portfolio can cheer its Contest leading 94.11% YTD gain. Just a tad behind are second place, GHMM’s portfolio, up 93.20% YTD and third place, BIOMAV’s portfolio, up 92.83% YTD.
At Friday's close, 44 of the 48 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 37 now beating the NBI and 27 now beating the SPSIBI.
The 195 Contest portfolio stock picks have an average YTD gain of 28.91% and a median YTD gain of a mere 3.70%, with 106 of the 195 picks up for the year. The wide discrepancy between the average and median portfolio stock gain confirms the experience of most successful biotech investors: a few huge winners, with many more losers.
