The past three hundred years of social evolution resulted from free expression of principled ideas, refined by shared beliefs and a desire to advance these traditions of liberty, so intensified that it drove actions to change societal circumstances. The degree to which we revere truth, unfettered by selfish convenience has opened many doors to advancement.

However we are as dumb as we've ever been or as brilliant. The evidence of enormous stupidity in society is over whelming, attempts at the tyranny of thought control are growing in popularity, and reverence for basic and immutable decency is crumbling.

It had little to do with intellectual growth and everything to do with the aspirations of our culture.
