"Ronald Reagan didn't leave the democratic party, the party left him.

Moreover, as he gained more insight into politics, it turns out that he was far less democrat than he thought, stating famously "I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism."

The democrat party has continued to slide away from personal responsibility, which Reagan believed was an American precept - "We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions" - and this continues to erode the base that believes that government should be limited, and that we're not a nanny country.

"I hope we once again have reminded people that man is not free unless government is limited. There's a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: As government expands, liberty contracts." - Ronald Reagan"
