Liberal arts education means different things to different people.

However, it is absurd to suggest that to be a great tradesman or engineer you need to be forced to lake bullshit courses of no interest.

Time is of the essence. We need vast numbers of people trained and retrained in STEM subjects. If someone wants a liberal arts education, fine. If someone wants to be a welder, fine. People should choose what their education is to be about.
