I've met some very intelligent people who were conspiracy freaks. It seems more a mental illness than shallow mindedness. It's a desire for extreme complexity and patterns- in a world filled with random shit and incompetence. Just my opinion, based on my observations on the (admittedly) limited number of conspiracy freaks I've met.
