There IS a big difference. For sure, government should not be in the business of running religious schools. That's a personal thing, and taxpayers ought not be paying to operate Catholic schools or other religious institutions.

OTOH, families who send their children to those schools ought not be paying to operate public schools, either. If, some year, they move their kids to public schools, they ought to have to pay the taxes to support them. That makes pretty good sense to me -- you pay for the schools your kids use. Maybe a negotiated solution, if need be. But fairness is a good thing.
