All great advice, except this one:
4. Download Little Snitch, an app that monitors your computer for sketchy outgoing connections. It will alert you if, for example, your computer tries to send data to an unknown server — perhaps a sign that your machine has been compromised.
Little Snitch is an outstanding program, but it's only available for Macs, which the author of this article must not know. The new version 4.0 is even better, with a great new interface and many new features.

I don't know of any Windows product that does the same thing, unfortunately.
