I guess in the case of NA, that ain't the case.

Each tribe decides what constitutes membership. Some want broader membership, others not. I've recall reading about tribes building casinos limiting membership to avoid diluting their shares.

NA tribes are among the few institutions with actual membership criteria. The Daughters of the American Revolution is another example. Unlike, say, Christians or Republicans, where identity is self-determined. And now gender...
