''Everything is a comparison problem right now,'' Ellison said. ''Asia was growing at 50 percent for us as recently as a year ago and now it has gone from 50 percent to negative. It has hurt us, but it's hurt everybody.

Asked if earnings weakness shown in the second quarter would continue, Ellison said, ''We do not think so ... it depends on Asia. If Asian weakness continues we will continue to have weak performance in Asia.''

Ellison said Oracle would continue to simplify its sales structure and that the restructuring was going well.

''We think our products are very competitive,'' Ellison said, ''and we are gaining market share in databases.''
