Going way back, I think Robin Li "invented" search algorithms based on links (that's how Baidu described how theirs was better), and Brin and Page copied it, rather than using Stanford IP (as hinted at by "when they were PhD students").

Otherwise, Google would have sued Baidu and they never did.

Otherwise, they both developed similar search methods independently at the same time.
