Exactly why in this current moment would he find it necessary to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem and ratify Israel assertion that Jerusalem is their capital? Why now?

Because, unlike some of his predecessors in the White House, he actually followed through and did what he said he was going to do during the campaign. BTW, Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and if the Pals and the rest of the world don't like it, tough nookie. You initiate wars, and lose them every time, you learn that the victor sets the terms. And perhaps now, as a result, the Pals and their Arab supporters will wake up to reality and deal with it accordingly. I'm not Jewish or religious in any way, but I support Trump and Israel 100% on this.

What exactly does the US have to gain from that?

The world's realization that the US now has a president who actually means what he says. And as for the resulting, so called "day of rage", they've been raging for decades with no meaningful alteration of the status quo.
