Year 2000 Fixers Haven't Hit Pay Dirt ... 'Less than 35 percent of Year 2000 companies have met their internal revenue goals, according to Gartner Group in Stamford, Conn.
But revenues may be about to pick up as more corporations realize the millennium clock is ticking.
So far, only 12 percent of American companies with 2,000 or fewer employees have started Year 2000 solutions, and just one in three larger companies have addressed the problem.
Industry analysts expect that companies will get serious about fixing the problem -- soon.
''If 1997 was the year of assessment, then 1998 has to be the year of correction,'' said Bob Austrian, an analyst at NationsBanc Montgomery Securities in San Francisco. ' ...
'''I always told myself I was going to die rich, and now I'm going to,'' said Pete Harris, chief executive of ADPAC Corp.
The San Francisco company's sales doubled this year, to $10 million, and it expects to top $40 million by 1999, he said. ADPAC employs 50 people -- twice its workforce of a year ago.
''I've been hollering for years and no one listened,'' Harris said. ''That will change next year. There will be panic in the streets in 1999. The media coverage of this will be greater than of the O.J. trial.'' ' |
