>> I'm not so sure it's changed all that much.

It hasn't. The difference between the rich and the poor just before the French revolution and today in this country is just about the same. It's easy for the wealthy like ourselves to forget about the inner cities. When the government changed the statistical unemployment sample from 67,000 to 60,000 a few months back, they did just that. The argument was that they were trying to save money. Sounds reasonable until you look at the details - the 7,000 came from large NE cities like NY, Chicago etc. We have more people in prison in this country on a per capita basis than anyone else. The people in prison just happen to be the poor. The rich generally don't go to prison for white collar crimes - funny how that works. The only real difference is that back then power and wealth only came from heritage and today some of it comes from those with knowledge and ambition.

This is why I get upset with the new era crowd. The basics, greed and fear, haven't changed over the centuries. As a matter of fact the French could never have afforded to keep as many people in prision. In the inner cities like DC were over 1/3 of the youth are in prison I just don't see any difference between then and now other than the food might be a little better - but then who knows, it could be worse in relative terms for all I know.
