Penni,

Yes, kids have a hard time with "I" and "me" in the early stages of learning. The French kids say "moi veux" just as ours say "me want". Too much parental correcting, I submit, may be responsible for some atrocious usages now found everywhere. Example:

Little Johnny: "Me and Tommy are going out."

Mother: No, say: "Tommy and I are going out." (Repeat thousands of times from ages two to ten).

Older Johnny: "Come on out with Tommy and I." (He has been taught that "I" if used with a proper noun, or even another pronoun, suddenly becomes an objective.)
I have actually heard, "It was all taken care of for she and I."

If that doesn't make your grammatical skin crawl, nothing will. Our Rhodes Scholar President asked us to vote for "Al Gore and I". But I didn't vote for Al Gore and he. In fact I would never vote for he with or without Al Gore. (Wouldn't vote for any current Republicans, either, but that's another story.)

Jack
