And if DOJ holds them to separate browser, they will rework it
another 6 months. So it will still be "on time". Or maybe,
they will just call it Win99, and get it out in the "first half"
of the year. My point was, and you have made it for me, that it
is an empty promise to say MSFT will release Win98 on time, when
there is no real deadline. Question is not will a release version
of Win98 be available for release in near future. Question is
will DOJ prevent the MSFT strategy that is behind the whole point
of the Win98 upgrade (tight browser integration). If DOJ wins,
that does not prevent Win98 per se, but it may require that MSFT
delay Win98 release until they can develop another version that
does not have the integral browser function.

I had a discussion recently where it was pointed out that DOJ
has not yet completed a review of Win98, and that one of the issues
may be requirement to allow integration of other Web browsers with
OS in lieu of MSFT product. Sound strange? Not so, because it is
something that is already happening in other browsers (add OS capa-
bilities) and other OS's.

Whatever, MSFT is going to be tied up with DOJ in the courts until
the end of the millenium, IMO. Doesn't mean that they won't make
money and grow. But that should be factored into the analysis of
both bears and bulls. To do otherwise is at your own peril.
