10 mbps throughput needs new OS management structure. Heavy on multiple thread interconneced object caching. A windowed environment needs the data frames partially assembled in the local cache or in imminent ramdisk cache derived from segment fetch from the local loop. Win95 and NT can't do this sveltdly without significant latency. It comes out as herky-jerky or wait-and-dump. Since current throughput with say, ATHM, runs between 1 and 2 mbps the usual message queue latency even with complex objects isn't a problem, but real time video is still herky even if it's rle static. If you try complex real time on-the-fly integration of real time video, the OS can't manage it so you really see the problem. NSCP has a chance to redesign the windows environment to utilize this advantage. They don't have the OS installed base to delimit what they can do. They aren't bogged down with the presumed necessity of embracing the backward compatibility requirements that come with vast market share. This is MSFT's true problem and why they won't be able to commandeer this nascent market. NSCP has to get up and start running after this brass ring though.
