Personally I don't think software -- whether it's OFX Gold or anything else -- will make much of a difference. I think banks will essentially give away electronic banking -- both billpay and e-bill -- until enough people get hooked on it. Then they'll make us start paying. Just like ATMs. And guess what? I'll grumble, but I'll pay. And it will be CKFR and the banks who will get the money.

I do see a chance that Intuit can cream off some of the e-bill business. Quicken 98 is already set up to do that, and I see that it looks for bills now every time I download stock quotes. But I think in the end most people will be checking in with their banks, not quicken.com, to get and pay their electronic bills.

As for Excite -- I take your point about the "button" revenues. That's why I wouldn't bet against AOL, through which I already have bought books (Amazon) and several airplane tickets (Preview Travel). But you said yourself, only 30 percent of Excite's money comes from buttons. And I see we agree on the issue of banner ads. I still think the shorts will eventually have a big payday on YHOO and all its imitators.

Just my opinion. If I were more certain and more courageous I would BE short and not just talking about it.
