While it has become a SI tradition and certainly is a lot of fun, looking at the previous contest results / participants, it becomes pretty obvious that an individual’s strategy doesn’t determine winners or losers. A big / the biggest part is luck. More specifically, luck in terms of timing and the timing of the contest (the fixed 12 months time frame) as it doesn’t reflect (trading) reality.

My own 2017 pick is a perfect example. My actual returns on MOX are quite different from the contest return. My true ROI is actually lower because I reacted to a fairly current event and bailed leaving a fair chunk of money on the table. I still think I made the right move but clearly, Mr. Market disagrees with me at this very moment.

In short, contest standings don’t necessarily reflect actual performance as in real profits or losses.
