My point is the quotes you admire can only be achieved by long term study. High school is simply not enough, imo....And to hit the critical mass whereby the mind learns "to think forever" takes at least four years of college.

I have doubts that either high school or college, as they are currently configured, is equipped to teach thinking. I have no doubt that only a minority is equipped or inclined to do it even if it's taught. Schools are doing a lot of things concurrently, sometimes incompatible things. I don't think that one gets much thinking training as a byproduct of learning other stuff. There are still places, I imagine, that focus on such skills, but getting a degree in marketing or agriculture at State U is unlikely to provide much value in that regard. If thinking is the desired objective, our current college system is a very inefficient way to produce it.
The upshot: Going to college is a lot like standing up at a concert to see better. Selfishly speaking, it works, but from a social point of view, we shouldn't encourage it.
I found that a brilliant metaphor. We really should be thinking about whether we want everyone standing up during concerts and then where do we go from there. Maybe stilts?

We would be best off with free pre school for every child and free community and state colleges across the nation.

I agree with you wrt pre-school. We can make the most difference when they're young.
