I was listening to Austin's AM590 Computalk this morning and the host was answering a question about which type of system to recommend based on his experience, he actually said the following:
stay away from build your own unless you are very savy,
absolutely do not buy a sub1k PC from anyone especially packardHell.
Stick to a business model from the majors like a Dell or CPQ, and a maybe a Gateway. Too many problems with the sub1k's, he mentioned all the standard things with hardware and software problems and compatibility issues.
I thought his answer was a good one. Of course I do not have all the facts and experiences current out there, but have heard enough to steer clear myself.
