Ramsey - Here is the better article explaining problems in database market in terms of "commoditization" due to Windows NT and SQL. This suggests a whole different interpretation of some of the problems in Tech land. Bill Wolman on CNBC (who I respect) keeps talking about a slowdown in the tech cycle starting in June. The commoditization of the networkers, the commoditization of the database makers all of these problems seem to be driven by different things than slow sales in Asia. Unfortunately Wolman isn't very specific in identifying his trends but it seems to be increased entry and competition in previously high growth high margin industries.
There is another factor which is that Intel and Microsoft are entering adjacent industries/businesses and ruining once profitable industries - see 3com and Picturetel for Intel and the database market for Microsoft. Not sure what to make of these trends nor how long they will last but they do provide an alternative or at least complementary explanation to what is going on in tech stocks to the Asian explanation. Perhaps if some tech stocks (such as Mighty Q) are not shown to be damaged by Asian problems then the focus will turn to companies that are truly dependent on Asian sales and or are experiencing competitive problems in their industries (not Mighty Q yet anyway).
