Angler:

In my "vast" experience of watching stock prices, I have very unscientifically identified a pattern related to splits. When a split is announced, the price of the stock jumps immediately. It then tends to drift down steadily between the time of the announcement and the day of the actual split. After the split (usually within 2 to 4 weeks), it begins to rise rather dramatically.

I have no explanation for this but have noticed it on several splits. A most notable one was Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) the bottling company for Coke last March. Staples will split on Jan. 30th, so we may see some more downside this month, then a good boost by March. I am teetering upon the brink of entering again.
