LONDON, Jan. 11 (UPI) - The British Broadcasting Corporation says it plans to auction off the recording rights of several rock legends. A BBC spokesman has confirmed British newspaper reports that rights for recordings of Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Genesis, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones would be auctioned, and talks are being held with interested parties. The vintage recordings, made in the 1960s and 1970s, were hidden for years in the BBC's archives. They were only discovered recently. While the artists, their managers or record companies own the performance rights, the recording rights have traditionally been held by the BBC. The Financial Times says John Willan, who is director of BBC Music Worldwide, has already met several potential buyers, including Hendrix's sister. A spokesman for the BBC says some rights to Rolling Stones recordings discovered last week might not belong to the broadcaster, and an investigation is being held to identify ownership. Most of the recordings were made for BBC's Radio 1 and the World Service. -- Copyright 1998 by United Press International. All rights reserved. -- |
