I would approve of a form of "Sharia" that is compatible with the modern era. I don't know what that would look like, or even if it's possible, but I'm not a Muslim scholar so it's not my job to figure that out.

That's what the free market of ideas is supposed to shape. That makes up the essence of "classical liberalism" which our country was founded upon. You give every ideology a chance to present itself using facts, logic, and moral reasoning. The ideologies that win will thrive, while those that fall short will have to be reformed.

Ideologies that can only be spread using force cannot last. Sharia law only survives right now because in many parts of the world, might still makes right. If Sharia law is to undergo a "reformation," the best chance it has for success would be in a Western style free market of ideas.

And that's something that liberals these days cannot grasp, for they have forgotten how to defend what they believe in.
