Let me see if I got this about right:

Republicans were liberal, and you were one, when Lincoln was president.

Republicans were liberal, and you were one, when LBJ was president.

But then, one day right along there (about the minute Nixon was sworn in) you switched parties and on the very same day, Republicans became evil and Democrats were excellent in all respects.

Is that how it worked?
