Cell service in Canada is fairly costly due to the smaller population density.

The wireless market is getting competitive in the US because of Deutsche Telekom's subsidiary T-Mobile.

Having paid $8 billion to purchase an enormous amount of spectrum formerly used by television broadcasters, T-Mobile is converting this bandwidth to 5G as it becomes available between now and 2020. The frequency of this bandwidth is lower than that used by the legacy carriers AT&T and Verizon, so will better penetrate buildings with thick walls.

With a huge amount of spectrum to fill T-Mobile has sharply cut prices in the US, by about 2/3, and plans to offer a wireless competitor to cable television.

I'm not sure the cable TV offering will be able to compete with more cell customers in the long run, but they're looking for anything to provide a return.

We now have a T-Mobile plan for those over 55 which for $30 a month provides unlimited voice, text and 50 GB of data per month. After the 50 GB per month, which we don't come close to, the speed slows down to 3G for the balance of the month.

For the $30 a month our plan data is also good in most other countries along with free texts. Voice calls are at the local rate. More users and more traffic will reduce costs further.
