Hm. I don't remember Helms or Thurmond recanting their past beliefs and apologizing. Nor do I remember them changing their actions and viewpoints.

They might have moderated the hate they spouted, but they maintained their same policies. Actions speak louder than words. With Helms and Thurmond, we didn't even have different words.

Unlike Byrd. Or, for that matter George Wallace. Granted, George didn't recant until long after he was no longer in politics. But at least he did.
