In a competitive, commodity market, which is pretty much what the uP market has become, the lowest cost supplier has the upper hand. Intel has costs rung out of their Pentium MMX parts because they are much farther down the experience curve than AMD and others and because the parts have a smaller die size than AMD or Cyrix. Centaur/IDT has the potential of having the lowest cost Pentium class part because they have a smaller die size at a given process design rule and the part uses one less metal interconnect layer which reduces manufacturing steps and further increases yields. At 88 mm sq., IDT should be able to achieve yields of upwards of 90% once they get their fabs humming. That is still a big if. They should be able to produce hundreds of thousands of the parts, they should have high yields, they should have low mfg. cost, etc. but until we hear what management has to say about how many freakin parts they are producing, the discussion is speculative.

Why not turn these puppies out by the boatload using UMC or some other nearly bankrupt Asian fab? IDT seems unable to produce enough parts to satisfy market demand or establish a position in the marketplace. Despite what Glen Henry says, ie that they are not trying to be the low cost supplier, with the exception of portable product markets or nay unannounced specialty applications, that is the only logical space for IDT to compete.
