I would let the states handle the legalization issue, but I favor a federal excise tax on marijuana.

One of my brother's friends works at a church. He hates when poor people (who he calls low life) stop by and ask for some food or money.

Most churches I know about have a benevolence fund for people who show up in need. They usually don't hand out cash though. They pay bills, send someone with them to buy clothes or whatever the need is. Churches in our area also fund Northwest Area Ministries that runs a food pantry, has an apartment complex for low income people, helps people find jobs, and a bunch of other things. I happen to know that the lady, now deceased, who founded the food pantry was a Republican.

The churches in this area really shone mobilizing volunteers during the flooding this past year.

AFAIK the largest non-government disaster relief organizations in the nation are run by the Southern Baptists / General Baptists and the Convoy of Hope run by the Assembly of God.

The Southern Baptist Convention’s disaster response is so massive it financially trails only the Red Cross and the Salvation Army—and has more trained disaster relief volunteers than either one.

Every hot meal [the Red Cross] serve[s] in a disaster setting in the United States is prepared by Southern Baptists.
