The socio-tech-media it is at a tough cross roads. No where there is a good overview of what is going on and how this unfold Search engines, the original business developed into Yellow Pages for businesses. Then went on to collect revenues from advertisement. The money was huge. Social enters the fray as they have big audiences that could be monetized and attacked the advertisement revenue stream. To get more money from ads, they needed more audience. First they distributed popular news the type Gawker, Buzzfeed people likes to read. Result? more ad revenue. But the social media wanted more: They went into fake news. It was at this point in time that they got too visible as fake news have been used to destabilize politicians and political programs. Before electronic media, people ate from the hands of government. Now they can eat from each others hands. I kow for sure that Facebook and Google like to have African and LATAM connectivity spread wide to connect the unconnected. They know the lower they go on the barrel the more people like "news" rumours, advertorials. NOTE: Ignorant people outnumbers reasonable people 1.000 to 1. The goal of anyone with an agenda is to go get the ignorant people. I warned people back in early 2013 that Brazil was facing a barrage of fake news and it had political motivation. People that I knew from the mid 70s disconnected from me from Facebook. They did not accept that they were being manipulated and manipulation was sending people to the streets. The 1% of this world are not going to accept manipulation. See EU fining Google and trying to rein in Facebook.
