Putin was able to get complete control over Russia and its policies for the foreseeable future because record oil prices flooded his country with oil revenue. He looked like a god. Then everything collapsed as oil prices collapsed and the god was shown for who he really is, a tyrant but a tyrant who ensures whoever runs against him is charged with crimes and thrown in jail which makes them ineligible to run against him (kinda like what Trump and the gop are doing). Our democracy is dead because there are people in the country who voted for the man Putin wanted them to vote for, a weakling, a liar, a racist. Putin and Trump have worked together to destroy the reputation of the US and destroy our ability to lead the world.
