I think the thesis of the conservative ideology has always been: "to conserve" the status quo, to hold onto the old ways. That is how it is used around the world. The leaders in the middle east are conservative, as is every despotic government in the world.

None of the despotic governments are liberal.

But there are off shoots to the conservative ideology beyond that. Secondary, IMO, is small government, which means by definition not helping the poor as there would not be money; and further to that, is "deconstructing the administrative state", which means not wanting to help the poor, selfishness and propagating he Horatio Alger idea as valid, when modern sociology knows it is not.

And last, where we are now, is the Republican party as an arm of the oligarchs, and attendant criminality.
