Report: John Kerry Told Abbas Confidante to Ignore Trump, Says He's Considering 2020 Run

Former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry reportedly told Hussein Agha — negotiator in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and a close associate of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas — to ignore President Donald Trump's demands, suggesting he wouldn't stay in office for long.

According to The Jerusalem Post, which quoted Israeli newspaper Maariv, Kerry asked Agha to tell Abbas to “hold on and be strong.”

Kerry, who also said he was considering running for president in 2020, wanted Abbas to “stay strong in his spirit and play for time” and asked that he “not break and will not yield to President Trump's demands.”

The Post reported that Kerry offered to create an alternative peace process and indicated the political establishment was dissatisfied with Trump:

According to the report, referring to the president, Kerry used derogatory terms and even worse. Kerry offered to help create an alternative peace initiative and promised to help garner international support, among others, of Europeans, Arab states and the international community. Kerry hinted that many in the American establishment, as well as in American intelligence, are dissatisfied with Trump's performance and the way he leads America. He surprised his interlocutor by saying he was seriously considering running for president in 2020. When asked about his advanced age, he said he was not much older than Trump and would not have an age problem.

News of Kerry's alleged comments came after Abbas denounced Trump's decision to declare Jerusalem, an area unsettled in the eyes of the international community, as Israel's capital.

“Mr. Trump's decision will never change the status quo of Jerusalem and will not give any legitimacy to Israel,” he said. He added that Trump's decision constituted an effective withdrawal from the peace process.

Both Trump and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley defended the decision and rebuffed countries that voted for a resolution calling for the administration to rescind its decision.
