You are right. If we don't have an unassailable common understanding of the rules of the game, and a fair reading of them by all sides, we are sunk. The failure of the Dims to see that they are shaking the foundations of our Republic because of their hatred of Trump is not just self-defeating as respects their prospects but will have far-ranging implications, none good. I'm afraid that is the Clinton's toxic legacy - partisanship at all costs. I don't think that it is too late for them to come to their senses, but I see no signs that they are. They are going to be hugely embarrassed.
