IMF's Fischer says talks with Suharto encouraging

JAKARTA, Jan 12 (Reuters) - IMF First Deputy Managing Director Stanley Fischer said he held an encouraging meeting with Indonesia's President Suharto on Monday on the need to strengthen the country's economic reforms.

''This was a very, very good meeting. We agreed on how to proceed,'' Fischer told reporters after 90 minutes of discussions with Suharto.

He said Suharto had once more reiterated his commitment to following reforms agreed with the IMF in exchange for a $43 billion bail-out plan in October.

''The president was very, very clear in his determination to stay with the programme and to strengthen it and to accelarate it,'' Fischer said. ''There was no ambiguity in what he said.''

He gave few specifics on what was agreed during the meeting but said details would be announced soon.

''I expect that in a few days the government of Indonesia will show in a very strong way its commitment to carrying out the programme and to undertake a variety of measures that should restore confidence in the economy.''
