Given that in a democracy, we empower those we elect with the perogative to choose for us then, in effect, we abdicate, to a great degree, our responsibility for making the day to day decisions. If we could derive an incentive for people to reclaim their perogative to make their choices in individual issues (as per your suggestion), we could arrive at concensus that represents the rational and informed opinions of.... our neighbors. Uh oh. On the other hand, maybe not my neighbors. Let's rethink this, shall we?
