It will catapault Intel into a position enjoyed by IBM in the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. The "mainframe" of the the early 21st century will have a MERCED or Merced II CLUSTER inside - from 1 to 256 of these. It will provide a platform for enterprice (read - big business !) computing that will allow software from every major player - Oracle, SAP, Sun, Microsoft, CA, etc. - to run on. Corporations will be buying super software for corporate-wide computing for MERCED because of the wide availablity of harware and variety of software packages - with data interchange among packages that is not found in today's corporate environment.
